Amity Speaker Series: The Power of Story

Amity Foundation 9/2 Speakers Event

Last week, Amity Foundation friends, students, and community came together in Los Angeles for the kick-off event in our Speakers Series, “The Power of Story,” for an inspiring night of community and connection.

Currently and formerly incarcerated women from Amity’s La Entrada campus shared their stories and writings as featured in the recently published anthology, The Sun Loves Me More. Speakers shared their experiences and hardships, but just as importantly, their resilience and joy.

Television writer/ producer and ASU Deputy Director Peter Murrieta introduced the panel, sharing that he created some of his most impactful and popular work by “doing what I know.” Doing what you know and being just who you are was a powerful theme that ran through the night. Many of the panelists reminded us that through it all, we are all the authors of our own stories and, ultimately, our own growth.

Attendees also heard from Amity Foundation CEO and President Doug Bond; Shirley Torres and Natalie Venegas of Homeboy Industries; as well as University of Southern California professors Nicholas De Dominic and Kate Levin, co-founders of the USC Dornsife Prison Education Project.

“The Power of Story was truly moving, and hearing Doug, Shirley, and the women from La Entrada share their experiences was deeply inspiring.”
